About Metals
Everyone has different sensitivities to metals depending on their body’s chemistry. Every product description includes the metals used. Although some metals are more tarnish resistant than others (gold filled and sterling silver), I do not recommend wearing any of my gold items while swimming or sweating to optimize their shine.
Gold plated
Thin layer of gold plated bonded over a jewelers metal such as copper or brass. It should not be worn in the water or while sweating as it is most vulnerable to tarnishing
Gold filled
Thick layer of gold plated to another metal like copper or brass. It is legally required in the US for the gold to be at least 5% of the total weight. While it is more tarnish resistant than gold plated, to maintain its optimal shine I recommend avoiding water.
Sterling silver
Made of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper it is suitable for everyday wear. The copper is subject to oxidizing over time, but can be cleaned and polished and returned to its original shine.
